Our recent Community Conversation with MascallDance brought together dancers, arts workers, and community members from across Vancouver for an honest check-in on where we are in dance at this time. The room carried a wide range of experiences, and people spoke openly about both the challenges they face and the possibilities they hope for.
Throughout the discussion, several themes kept returning. Many shared the need for more access to affordable and flexible space–places to train, rehearse, and gather. Others spoke about sustainable working conditions, fair wages, and the desire for clearer, more reliable support systems. There was a strong call for deeper community care, more opportunities to connect, and the creation of artistic environments that welcome risk, diversity, and experimentation. Several people also reflected on broader shifts in funding and the need for stronger political advocacy, especially as artists navigate changing systems.
Participants offered thoughtful insights on how conversations like this can be strengthened. Some named the need for more time and a structure that invites a wider range of voices and practices. Others reflected on the dynamics of who speaks, who holds space, and how we can share that responsibility more equitably in future gatherings.
This conversation was a beginning. The thoughts and care that people brought into the room will guide how we shape future dialogues—slower, deeper, and more collaborative.
Thank you to everyone who joined us. Your presence mattered, and we look forward to continuing this work together.
