SOCAN & Dance Instructors

Purchasing music from a store or online gives the individual the right to listen to the music – but not to play it for profit. This has suddenly become a new issue within the Dance industry (and most especially within the Dance Education industry) over the past three years as SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) has made a point of contacting many studios, venues and dance businesses across Canada to bring them into legal compliance.

Due to the unregulated state of dance studios and dance education businesses in Canada, the issue of annual SOCAN dues for playing music for dance activities has sparked a large amount of confusion – and in some instances – controversy.

Is the SOCAN fee a studio fee or is the fee to be paid by individual instructors?
What about music used at dance competitions?
